Orchid VPN is a decentralized VPN that utilizes blockchain technology to enhance user privacy and security. It operates on a P2P encrypted network, facilitating transactions through cryptocurrency nano-payments. Although it has offices in both the United States and Germany, Orchid VPN does not have a specific physical location, which may cause some confusion among users. I delved into the various features of this VPN to see how it stacks up against traditional, more established VPN services, focusing on aspects such as streaming capabilities, speed, security, privacy, and torrenting.

Streaming Performance and Limitations

Orchid VPN struggled to unblock many streaming services during my tests, and when it did succeed, there were some unexpected results. A primary reason many users opt for a VPN is to bypass geographic restrictions on content. Without access to the appropriate server locations, it becomes challenging to view favorite shows and movies. Currently, users are limited to connecting only to US servers, which significantly narrows their options. Additionally, due to a considerable reduction in speed, a fast internet connection is essential for uninterrupted HD streaming.

Successful Access: Disney+

Upon activating Orchid VPN and connecting to the US server, I was able to access Disney+. However, despite being recognized as located in the US, the platform defaulted to Spanish for both subtitles and audio. While Orchid VPN was able to navigate Disney+’s geographic restrictions, the unexpected language settings were an interesting quirk.

Blocked Platforms: Netflix US, Hulu, HBO Max

My attempts to access other popular US streaming platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max were unsuccessful. Netflix did not change my library to the US version, and both Hulu and HBO Max detected the VPN and denied access. With the limited server options available through Orchid VPN, I cannot endorse it as a reliable choice for streaming. As the technology evolves, however, improvements in obfuscation and server capabilities may enhance streaming performance.

Speed Analysis: Variable and Generally Slow

Orchid VPN exhibited highly variable speeds, generally leaning towards the slower end of the spectrum. Given that the service relies on a decentralized network where users provide nodes, this is somewhat anticipated. The inherent slowdown due to encrypted traffic further exacerbates speed issues, making it challenging to achieve the fast connections typical of well-established VPNs. Should the network expand to include more high-speed users, there could be future improvements in speed.

Local Speed Measurements

To assess Orchid VPN’s performance, I first noted my base internet speed for comparison. Since my only location option was the US, I began with a base speed of 28.70 Mbps in Bucharest, which featured a low ping of 3 ms and a decent upload speed of 7.85 Mbps. Unfortunately, connecting to Orchid VPN drastically reduced my download speed by as much as 91%, with the lowest recorded speed at 2.51 Mbps, which is adequate for standard definition streaming but falls short for HD. The ping rate rose to 148 ms on the fastest connection, which is not ideal for gaming. The upload speed also diminished to 2.27 Mbps, indicating a significant slowdown.

Server Network: Decentralized and Limited

Orchid VPN operates on a decentralized server network, which has its benefits and drawbacks. This system resembles the P2P structure of Tor, relying on third-party individuals who stake OXT tokens to provide a global pool of IP addresses. Currently, users can only connect to servers within the US, which limits the network’s versatility. Although you can create custom server hops by adding your own VPN provider’s configurations, this process is complex and requires technical knowledge. The scalability of the network suggests that performance could improve significantly as Ethereum evolves.

Security Features: Promising, but in Development

Orchid VPN’s structure offers a promising approach to online security, employing node hopping similar to Tor, along with VPN encryption. However, as this technology is relatively new, its effectiveness remains largely untested. Users must trust the individual node/IP owners and third-party server operators, raising potential concerns regarding susceptibility to man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks. While Orchid VPN’s decentralized nature may provide resilience against downtime, it could still be vulnerable to large-scale attacks on the Ethereum network.

Encryption Protocols

The encryption utilized by Orchid VPN operates similarly to OpenVPN, leveraging WebRTC technology commonly used for real-time communications. As a result, online activities appear as standard WebRTC traffic. Users can configure multi-hop connections, which enhance security by routing traffic through multiple nodes. However, the service cautions users to proceed at their own risk, creating uncertainty about its reliability as a security measure.

Leak Test Results

In my testing, Orchid VPN successfully prevented data leaks, although results can vary depending on the specific server configuration. Key leak types to avoid include IP address leaks, DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks, and IPv6 leaks. I was pleased with the leak test outcomes, suggesting that users can largely trust Orchid VPN to safeguard their data, though it may lack some security features found in traditional VPNs.

Privacy Considerations

While decentralized VPNs like Orchid VPN offer privacy advantages, concerns remain due to its newness. Since there is no single company managing logs, the location of its offices should not impact user privacy significantly. However, users must still trust the providers they connect to, as their online activities may be subject to the influence of those staking significant amounts in the network. Metadata and timestamps are recorded, a common practice for VPNs, and the privacy policy is available in the app and on the website.

Torrenting: Proceed with Caution

Orchid VPN does not explicitly prohibit torrenting, as its architecture is designed for P2P transfers. However, the decentralized nature raises concerns regarding potential surveillance by third parties. While I do not advocate for illegal downloads, users should be aware of the risks associated with torrenting. Additionally, low speeds during my tests may render the service less effective for file sharing.

Performance in China: No Guarantees

In theory, a decentralized VPN should function in restrictive environments like China, provided the app is pre-installed. However, no VPN can guarantee success against stringent firewalls. Given that Orchid VPN employs novel technology, caution is advised for users in China, particularly those attempting to configure their own servers.

Device Connections: Unlimited Sharing

Once an account is funded, Orchid VPN allows users to share access with an unlimited number of devices and individuals. However, complications may arise when attempting to connect multiple devices using the same IP.

Device Compatibility: Limited Options

As of now, Orchid VPN does not offer a Windows application, limiting its use to macOS, iOS, and Android devices. Users can access an APK file for Android from GitHub and download a Linux client from the blog, but finding these resources may not be straightforward. Development of a Windows app is underway, and the open-source nature of Orchid VPN suggests potential for increased compatibility in the future.
